U.S.A.A.F. Combat Cargo Groups of the Second World War

1st Combat Cargo Group, 2nd Combat Cargo Squadron

Imphal, India

Lt. Harry W. Peters, Jr.

In latter November 1944, my squadron was moved to Imphal.  The infamous Tokyo Rose, who promised a Japanese bombing raid as a welcoming gesture, mentioned our arrival.  I can't remember if her promise was kept.  We were continuing to supply the British in their southward drive.  I cannot now recall how all that equipment and all those supplies were transported to us in order that we could then pass them on by air to those who required them.  In retrospect, the logistical effort involved, to obtain and deliver all the supplies had to have been tremendous and very well organized throughout the entire CBI Theatre of Operations.  While at Imphal many of our squadron members put into working order some of the vehicles left behind as the British forged ahead.  One fellow put a jeep in good running order from scavenged parts, the rest of us were satisfied with motorcycles that we used for sight seeing the area when we had leisure time.  Our time at Imphal had been very short, only about three weeks and then we were off to Tsuyung, China.  By the way, we had to part company with the vehicles.

I am looking for former members of the 3rd Combat Cargo Group,  1st, Combat Cargo Group, 2nd Combat Cargo Group and the 4th Combat Cargo Group.  In fact I would like to hear from anyone who flew over the Hump during WW II, or flew any Combat Cargo Missions at any time (Berlin Air-Lift, Korea, etc.)

Please e-mail comment, suggestions, corrections, etc to: bill.b@erols.com
