It Began at Imphal

"It Began At Imphal" the historically correct documentation of the 4 Combat Cargo Groups created during World War II to solve the logistics of jungle and island warfare where roads and other means of transportation were not available

In 1943 the War Department created a new air supply system - Combat Cargo - to service troops in the inaccessible jungles and island areas of W.W.II. Completely self-sufficient and capable of moving on short notice while at the same time being nearly 100% operational, Combat Cargo was to carry ground troops and equipment to the fighting zone, maintain reinforcements, furnish complete logistical supply, and evacuate the wounded and other personnel.

John Martin has presented a chronology of the original four groups, their missions in W.W.II and their history and subsequent lineage through the Berlin Crisis and on to the Korean War. Martin's story shows evidence that these original groups were indeed progenitors of today's modern airlifters and their programs around the world.
